Our car rental through Aegean went very smooth. The car wasn't brand new but it was in nice shape and renting a slightly used car makes sense and keeps their prices reasonable. The Toyota ran like a champ and the rental process was fast and efficient. Drop off was easy, we had to leave before anyone arrived so we dropped the car in the area and put the key in the key slot. The insurance was also easy and full coverage including liability insurance was reasonably priced. A suggestion for renting a car in Crete, don't get the big ones, coming from Canada where we are used to bigger cars, the smaller ones fit the roads and traffic better and are very good on gas. One constructive comment, Aegean brokered the rental through another rental company, they chose well and set up all the parameters, the only thing we weren't sure of was the name of the rental company, we figured it out but we were looking for Aegean Rentals and it was another company that we got the car through. The car rental was good and I would use this company again.

Aegean Rentals outsourced my booking to a local partner called Traffic, which turned out to be quite an experience. The first car I received was a Toyota Aygo with over 160,000 km on the clock. Calling it "well-used" would be generous. The vehicle looked like it had already completed several lifetimes as a rental car. Fortunately, the fuel tank was nearly empty, because that's how I discovered its most impressive feature: the fuel cap was permanently locked. Neither I, the gas station attendant, nor the Traffic staff themselves could open it. After less than an hour, I was back at the airport demanding a replacement. The replacement was a Nissan Micra with—surprise—more than 160,000 km as well. It came pre-equipped with a collection of dents, scratches, repair marks, and enough rattles and mysterious noises to keep me entertained throughout the trip. Every drive felt like a conversation between worn-out mechanical components negotiating how much longer they were willing to stay together. To be fair, the Micra got me where I needed to go. It never broke down, and there were no surprise charges at the end of the rental. The entire rental cost just €70 for five days, which is undeniably cheap. In hindsight, I suppose that's because Traffic appears to specialize in providing a dignified retirement home for former rental cars. If you're wondering where rental cars go after decades of loyal service, I've found the answer: they go to Traffic to spend their final years.
